Trace Memories
An interactive sculpture that maps memories to places
Trace Memories is a map and sculptural installation that makes explorable my personal recollection of walking in the woods at Weetamoo Preserve in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and making audio field recordings.
The composition consists of a large trail map on a wall, made from wires and electronics and handcrafted components. The map invites participants to don headphones and touch metal markers to explore listening to different locations, hearing back field recordings taken at those places. Each canister contains a miniature, light-up painting as well, that depicts something I saw at that location.
Mosaic stones, mirrors and electronics were used to create the wall map. The markers used capacitive sensing to activate the location-based recordings in the headphones, and then light-up a small LED inside the canister. I imagine the containers to be like tiny time capsules for memories.
The artwork is inspired by the writings by Yi Fu Tuan on space and place
