Two Rivers
An eco-sculpture that explores the tension between reality and fantasy
Two Rivers contrasts the notion of “fantasy” versus “imagination”, viewed through a cultural lens that questions our relationship with the natural world. The “fantasy” element is represented by a dead-chair, situated in an art gallery indoors; the “imagination” element is represented by a living-chair, floating atop a river in motion. In this work, fantasy becomes a disempowering escape from reality; where imagination is seen as the empowered engagement with reality. Culture seems to conflate these concepts, but I view them as opposite.
“To foster deeper ecological sense we must first cultivate cultural imagination—a challenge both timely and appropriate for the arts.”
